Abstract: After analyzing national and regional
reports and interviews with educational leaders in the mid-Atlantic
region, the MARSSB team selected postsecondary pre-service
teacher faculty and rural educators as its two key target
populations for space science outreach. The first step in
developing a strategy to serve these two populations was to
develop a better understanding of the current condition of
mathematics and science teaching and educational technology
use at minority-serving and rural K-12 and postsecondary institutions
in the mid-Atlantic region. While data exist that document
the disparity experienced by minority-serving postsecondary
and rural K-12 schools, MARSSB’s research is more specific,
focused on finding ways that the resources of the NASA Office
of Space Science education and public outreach program can
help address unmet needs in terms of the resources, services,
and expertise it has to offer.
